When Your Heart Takes Over
At last, Randall Lannen will be able to fulfill his dream, or so it seems. After being surrounded by the boredom of his hometown and the dullness of its life, he got an excellent opportunity to work at one of the most prestigious trading companies in the city of Waterdeep. Of course, the job he got was not really what he was expecting (just a little more challenging than a secretary work) but it might be the beginning of something more important. At least, that is what his adventuring spirit was telling him: Feeling the sea breeze every time you go sailing, going through perilous trade routes, and, as they say, get a girl (or more) in every port your job can take you to. Yes, life (or at least the prospect of it) seemed much better than staying in that forsaken town, with nothing else to do than farming, or the occasional mercenary job, protecting caravans from common thieves.
Before leaving his former, and not so exciting, life behind, he decided to tell his best friends the good news. They might be surprised, or even sad, to hear that he would have to leave (maybe for good), but he knew that in the end they would be happy for him. After all, they were his friends, the best anybody could have. Even if they didn't agree with his decision, he knew that his life was elsewhere. Or did he?

Main Characters
Randall Lannen, the guy with the adventuring spirit. His parents were born and lived in the town all their lives and were expecting him to do the same, take charge of the farming business of the family and that sort of thing. Of course, he wanted more. He wants to experience the excitement that only a big city can provide. His uncle Marvin manages a small trading company and distributes the merchandise all over the towns that surround the city, including his town. Finally, after talking with his uncle, he decided to give him a chance in his business, although he mentioned something about starting from the bottom. Now Randall is preparing himself for the life ahead. |
Laureen Celest is Randall's childhood best friend. Her parents died when she was very young and she was raised by some relatives in town. The first time they met was when they were almost 6 years old or so. She was trying to take some apples from a tree near both their houses. He just offered himself to help her, something she reluctantly accepted. She thought of hitting them with a stick to make things easier, but she accidentally hit a hive. Trying to protect her, he just covered her body with his jacket as they both ran like crazy. Since then, he became sort of her bodyguard, willingly or not. She has always been a very shy girl in general, but she never hesitated to talk to him about anything. Some people have the impression they are a couple, but they are more like siblings (at least that is what he thinks). Laureen works helping Mr. Grenmerbroon with the store. Although she never went to an administration school, she did the job so efficiently that Mr. Grenmerbroon promoted her to administrator of the store and even gave her a raise (something amazing considering the old scrooge's fame). Laureen is also very devoted. She goes to church every weekened and occasionally helps Father Tomar with the church's chores. |
Mari Blake, the prettiest girl in town. Randall and she have also been friends for a long time. Her father is the mayor of the town, and since the town is pretty small, her house also acts as the town hall. Unfortunately her mother just passed away last year and she has been trying to cope with that. Now she is helping his father run the town affairs. She also travels to the city quite often to run errands for her father and to complete her management studies. She is not very fond of the city life in general, but she admits that the fashion market there is what makes everything more enjoyable. During school times, she was a little snobbish and liked to give orders around (especially to poor Laureen). Being the prettiest girl at the school had all the boys eating from her hand (that is, all the boys except Randall). It took almost 50 small skirmishes with him to get her into reason, but in the end they became good friends. After some time, her father sent her to a convent for 3 years, so she could become "a lady". Randall barely knew anything from her all that time, but she would at least sent him a birthday card every year. When she came back, he could barely recognized her. She had lost all her snobbish attitude and was really behaving like a lady. Randall didn't know what happened, but it was good to see that she had become a very beautiful and well mannered lady. Since then, Mari has been helping her father and, occasionally, gives Randall some job to do in order to help the community. With such a beauty in charge of the town affairs, he could barely refuse. |
Darryl Fynolt, one of Randall's best friends. They have been friends since his family moved to the town almost 10 years ago. A nice guy in general, but with the nasty habit of trying to pick any girl he can, although most of the time all he gets is a nice slap in the face. He always try to approach Dani the barmaid and, although she has not accepted any date from him, she doesn't dislike being approached by him, either. Darryl is the sort of guy who likes the life in the town. Good food and less work. His father is a politician, but is never in town, so he lives with his mother. When Darryl was a boy, he was sent to the city to study in one of the most prestigious male schools there, but he ended up disliking the city, because of his being bullied by other kids. It is probable that being in a male school had something to do with his habit of picking girls. Although he is good-hearted in nature, he can help it being a little bit rude around girls. |
Merin Grenmerbroon, the general store owner. A scrooge from every point of view. Mr. Grenmerbroon owns the only general store in town, making quite a fortune with that. He has no family on his own (her wife died a long time ago in some accident in the city and they had no kids). Mr. Grenmerbroon comes from a family of prosperous merchants, but he got disowned when he married Mrs. Grenmerbroon. In any case, he didn't care about that and began making his own fortune. Unfortunately, when his wife died, he became so fed up of the city and the hypocrisy of its people, that he decided to move to the town and live there. He is a good man, but constantly mentions that money should be the most important thing in anybody's life. It would seem that the only person who came to like the old scrooge is Laureen. She says that Mr. Grenmerbroon is good and nice and the problem is that nobody understands him. Maybe she is right. |
Father Tomar, the priest in the town. A really nice old man. He has been priest for 40 years and, although there are not many people going to church recently, he tries to keep everything up in the church. He tries to organize some events to get the community together, although it is well known that people only go there to have free booze. Mari seems to have the same feeling; however, she helps him with the organization of the events. Recently, Randall has been going to church more often (partly because he is constantly asking Father Tomar for advice and partly because Laureen told him to do so). When he was young, he thought that he was made for adventure and refused to continue his studies in Mystra University. He also thought that putting his abilities to work was more important than being secluded in a building just reading while people were dying out there. However, a terrible mistake he did made him think about his way of living, and since then, he promised not to let his ignorance be the cause. After all, what good is to adventure in ignorance? |
Larik Blake, the Town Major. A guy with a very strong character. Although an excellent person, sometimes you can get the impression he is pushy and tries to push his will into others. When Randall was a kid, he used to go to Mari's house to play or do homework and Larik used to tell him that he must take care of his little princess or he would have his head. Of course he would laugh and give Randall a pat in the head (sometimes too strong for a pat), but that was enough to scare him so much that Mari had to convince him he didn't mean it. When Randall told him about being an adventurer and knowing more of the world, he congratulated him for his courage but told him that, as a man, he should settle things down first. Even though his wife passed away, he has been trying to be strong not only for himself, but also for the town, and more importantly, for Mari. |
Flora Marlsen, the School Teacher. She is the kind of person that makes you feel at peace every time you speak with her. She is totally the opposite of Mr. Grenmerbroon in the sense that she is always saying that money is not everything and the most important thing in life is being happy and that sort of things. You might imagine that she might be rich to say that but, in fact, the school she and her husband run can barely sustain themselves. Even though, she claims that she has never been as happy as now. |
Dani Galie, the Barmaid, and Darryl's platonic love. Dani is Laureen's best friend, since she is also an orphan and knew the feeling of it, too. Unlike Laureen, she grew up in Church. She never knew the love of parents, or even relatives, but Father Tomar did the best he could to raise her (also giving her a strong religious education, even though she sometimes seems to lack it). She just finished school and, since she could not afford a higher school, she decided to work first, until she could save some money and go out on her own. She has an obsession with getting out of the town and leave behind everything it represents. She started working with Mr. Grenmerbroon and Laureen at the general store, thinking that she could earn good money there, but she got bored so quickly that Mr. Grenmerbroon didn't have any alternative but to fire her. After that, she just tried to work at the local Inn, so at least she would not have to pay for rent. Trisha hesitated at first, but because of Laureen, Dani got accepted. It has been 4 years now and she seems to be quite comfortable there. Although she has to bear with some customers, especially drunken ones, she says that it is just a matter of months before leaving this place for good. |
Trisha Lyonard, the Inn Keeper. She took the job from her parents when they got sick and now she takes care of them and the inn business. In general, she can manage it quite well, but when summer season comes and there are a lot of tourists from the city, she can hardly keep up. Since Dani took the job as helper, she is a little bit relieved (except during the rare occasions in which plates are broken in the kitchen or some customer demands to have a date with the cute barmaid before paying his drinks). Her parents told her she should marry, so she may have somebody to help her with the inn, but she feels she is not ready for that yet. Being the only daughter, Trisha sees Dani as the little sister she never had, and, although Dani seems to be indifferent to that, she sees Trisha as her big sister too. And they act like sisters too, since every time Darryl is hit by Dani, Trisha tries to calm her down. |
